People’s Self-Help Housing celebrates 55 years on Central Coast
Organization founded in 1970 continues mission of affordable housing
– People’s Self-Help Housing celebrated its 55th anniversary this month with staff gathering to recognize past achievements and future goals.
“What a privilege for an organization to celebrate 55 years,” said Ken Trigueiro, CEO and president of People’s Self-Help Housing. “From our origins on the heels of the seminal Fair Housing Act of 1968 to today, we have been proud to participate in the numerous partnerships that have brought tens of thousands of units of affordable housing to the Central Coast.”
Over the past 55 years, the organization has developed more than 2,200 affordable rental units at 60 properties across the Central Coast. Through property management, it has provided safety, security and stability for residents. Nearly 5,000 owner-builders have participated in the organization’s self-help program, using sweat equity to build wealth and become homeowners. People’s Self-Help Housing has also supported households with homebuyer education, down payment assistance programs and foreclosure prevention counseling.
The organization’s Supportive Housing Program has provided case management and connections to community health services for thousands of individuals. Its educational programs have offered support to students in kindergarten through eighth grade, mentorship to college-bound students and guidance beyond higher education. The organization employs more than 250 staff members working in four counties.
To support its ongoing work, donations are accepted at pshhc.org/give-today.
