PG&E donates poles for Cal Poly timber sports event
Two 80-foot poles will support the 2026 competition
– Pacific Gas and Electric Company has donated and installed two 80-foot wood poles at Cal Poly to support the university’s co-ed Logging Team in hosting the largest collegiate timber sports competition in the country in spring 2026.
For more than 30 years, Cal Poly’s Logging Team has provided students from various academic disciplines the opportunity to participate in competitive co-ed sports. The team currently includes 109 students representing more than 15 majors.
“On behalf of the Cal Poly Logging Team, I want to thank PG&E for their generous donation and installation of two new climbing poles,” said Joe Carniglia, president of the Cal Poly Logging Team and a fourth-year forest and fire sciences major. “These poles will not only enhance our training capabilities, but they will also allow us to host the 2026 Association of Western Forestry Clubs Conclave with upgraded facilities and equipment. PG&E’s support helps ensure we can deliver a first-class event and showcase the best of collegiate logging sports.”
More than 200 competitors from 10 universities across the western United States are expected to participate in the event, which will feature pole climbing as the main competition.
“Our commitment extends beyond infrastructure. We’re investing in programs the community values—in this case, we’re helping students experience the many benefits of collegiate athletics,” said PG&E Regional Senior Manager Jeremy Howard. “For many, joining a team like this provides a sense of belonging, while also building confidence and practical skills that will serve them well beyond college.”
Through the competition, students gain hands-on experience with specialized equipment, develop leadership skills, and make industry connections that can influence their future careers. Several PG&E employees are former members of Cal Poly’s timber sports team, making the partnership a return to their roots.
