Paso Robles Pickleball tournament sets new records
–This year’s Paso Robles Wine Country Classic pickleball tournament was the largest organized pickleball event in the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) Central California District to date.
Held on April 29-30, 191 players competed on 21 courts. During the course of 254 matches, 156 medals were awarded over the two-day event. This was the fourth pickleball tournament hosted by the Paso Robles Pickleball Club and the City of Paso Robles Recreation Services and the first year associating the event with the Paso Robles wine industry. The club hosted a sold-out, sit-down dinner at the beautiful Calcareous Winery following the first day of the event. A bottle of a Paso Robles wine was included with the gift bag given to each registered adult player, a tradition that is unique to the Paso Robles Wine Country Classic.

The USAPA predicts that pickleball will grow to 8 million players by the end of 2018. The Central Coast features seven permanent and more than 20 playing venues. Local pickleball growth continues to mirror the national growth trend. With 82 percent of players visiting from outside the Paso Robles area. USAPA Assistant Region Director Steve Sidwell said, “The event brings business to the local business community with hotels, wineries, restaurants and RV parks being direct recipients of the growing passion for pickleball.”
Pickleball is a sport combining tennis, badminton and ping-pong. The game is played both indoors and outdoors on a badminton-size court over a slightly modified tennis net with a paddle and plastic ball with holes. For more information about local pickleball, visit Pickleball Paso Robles.
