Update: Police investigate apparent suicide of 12-year-old

    Update posted Feb. 5:

–On Thursday, the Paso Robles Joint Unified School District released a statement regarding the apparent suicide of a 12-year-old girl that happened earlier this week:

The Paso Robles Joint Unified School District along with Lewis Middle School, is deeply saddened to report that a sixth grade student passed away on Wednesday evening.

PRJUSD Superintendent Chris Williams said, “Our thoughts and prayers are w~h her and her family and I can’t say enough to convey the heartache and the sadness we feel. We lost a wonderful student who will be sorely missed by all who knew her.”

Lewis Middle School staff, students, and parents were notified this morning. District counselors and the Paso Robles Joint Unified School District Crisis Team will be at the school site to assist students and staff who may be in need of support. District staff is working closely with the family and providing support as needed.

More information will be shared as it becomes available. We respectfully request that you allow the family, staff, and students to have privacy during this difficult time. All requests for information should be directed to the PRJUSD Public Information Officer.

    Original story posted Feb. 4:

On Wednesday at approximately 7:50 p.m., the Paso Robles Police Department received a 9-1-1 call reporting a medical emergency at a residence in the 1100 block of Linda Circle.

Paso Robles Department of Emergency Services personnel and SLO Ambulance responded to the scene, along with police officers. They located a 12-year-old female who had apparently committed suicide. Lifesaving efforts were performed but the victim was unable to be resuscitated and she was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigators from the police department are working with coroner investigators from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department to determine the circumstances surrounding this death.

The deceased is not being identified because she is a juvenile.

The map above shows the vicinity of the reported suicide.

We need to do something about bullying this is a very serious problem at paso Robles high school this is so sad bullying really needs to stop it is very sad we live in a very sad world I will keep her family in my prayers my niece is going to paso Robles high school next year and my sister was talked to by some staff members at paso Robles high school about the bullying

    Jane M Belmont

I am so sorry that this youngster felt she had no other choice. That being said, I don't think that the Press should have identified the area in which she lived. It isn't enough that she is not identified because of being a juvenile, her area of residence should not have been identified either. Perhaps this is something that you, as responsible reporters, can take into consideration.

    Danielle Marie Wilson

    Is your daughter hot?

This isn't the fault or her PARENT or their lack of fighting for their child. I am sure they are holding some guilt that they don't need judgmental people like yourself putting your opinion and some sort of blame on them. I know for a fact the parent of this child loved her more then anything and fought for her like there was no tomorrow. Maybe you should put yourself in their shoes and think about how your statement affects them and how it would make you feel!

    Amelia Ramos

News staff should NOT have given out the location of the residence. Police need to investigate this case deeply. Kids (especially so young do not attempt suicide very often at all. (It's 1/500,000 for kids 13-20). For 12 year olds the stats are much lower. Also, kids this young usually are not successful. They usually do not actually want to die. On top of that, girls are 1/2 as likely to be successful in committing suicide. Boys are more final, but girls are often saveable. So, a 12 year old female being successful is incredibly suspicious to me.

    Terri Holmes

So Very Sad!! My heartfelt wishes of condolences to her family and friends. Praying for all of you.

    Scarlett English

I agree with Randy maybe you should put yourself in their shoes. That's the worst thing in the world that could ever happen to you is lose a child especially to suicide I'm sure her parents are blaming themselves and then to have people like you that don't even know what was going on make hurtful comments it's awful. I didn't know her parents but her mom is my nephews step mother my thoughts and prayers are with her my nephew and all of her family and friends. I'm so sorry this has happened. She is with God in heaven now. May she Rest In Peace.

    Stainbrook Benjamin

I know tho family she was a great person and her brother is a great friend. May this family charish good memories of her.

    Dani Kominsky

It's rumored she was being bullied. Stop blaming the parents.

    Dani Kominsky

Because little jerks think bullying is okay.

    Karen Michele Bayus

Danielle Marie Wilson go away, you are disgusting

    Louis Vetter

    Agreed.

    Sandra Pearl

Danielle Marie Wilson I think the police should be notified that there is a pediphile on here!

    Sandra Pearl

What a heartless, disgusting thing to say! A lot of kids who are bulied don't speak up but if her parents did know, I'm sure they did everything they could to help her. I have a child who was bullied and I did and still do everything I can to help him, including counselling but I still fear for the lasting effects bullying has. Even though I don't think my child has it in him to take such drastic measures, you just never know and that has always been in the back of my mind. I hope you are not a parent, but if you are, you better take those rose colored glasses off and realize that a parents unconditional love is not always enough to prevent such a tragedy. Oh, and btw…that child was a friend of my daughters and it's people like you that I need to shelter her from!!!

    Danielle Barragan

If it was bullying……. parents need to listen. My son went through an episode while in 1st grade with another boy who was being rough with him in a joking matter, and parents don't see it as that. "Oh, boys will be boys"……. uh, no! THAT IS bullying! If your kid is being bothered by it and it doesn't stop, it IS bullying.
You as a parent must NOT say "just ignore them" because THAT IS NOT enough. I know what it was like and even as an adult I know what it's like……which would be considered harassment.
    Listen and pay attention

    Danielle Barragan

    Maybe her account was hacked

    Kevin Harvey

A gofundme account has been setup to assist the family during this tragic time.
