Police investigate suspected homicide in Morro Bay 

Victim killed by a large, blade style weapon, preliminary investigations reveal

The subject has been identified as 23-year-old William Joel Schonberger of Morro Bay

–A little after 6 a.m. Friday, the Morro Bay Police Department was notified by the California Highway Patrol of a possible homicide that had occurred in the City of Morro Bay.

CHP officers contacted a 23 year old male suspect in the Avila Beach area who advised them he had injured a relative/family member in Morro Bay. The subject, later identified as William Joel Schonberger of Morro Bay, was detained by CHP and later taken into custody by Morro Bay Police Department.

Morro Bay police officers responded to a residence on the 400 Block of Napa Avenue where they discovered the body of a deceased male adult who has now been identified as 59 year-old William John Schonberger of Morro Bay.

The suspect was interviewed by investigators and provided information connecting him to the death of the victim. Preliminary investigation reveals the weapon to be a large blade style weapon and that he acted alone.

The San Luis Obispo County Crime Scene Detectives and District Attorney’s Office is assisting Morro Bay Police Detectives in the investigation.
