Update: Highway 1 on Big Sur Coast is open now, will close again Wednesday

highway 1 closure

Atmospheric river with heavy rainfall will close Highway 1 on Wednesday

– Highway 1 from Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County, to just south of Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn in Monterey County, is fully reopened as of 8 a.m. today.

Travelers will encounter one-way reversing traffic control at Paul’s Slide (PM 22) where contracted crews will continue to work to clean out debris behind the catchment area.

The current plan calls for Hwy. 1 to remain open Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

Highway 1 will close again on Wednesday with the same or similar closure parameters as were previously in place. An exact time for this Wednesday closure has not yet been established and Caltrans will provide an update.

The one-day reopening of Highway 1 is designed in part to allow for residents and businesses within the closure area to circulate and gather necessary supplies.

A severe atmospheric river event is expected to arrive Wednesday and there is a forecast for additional heavy weather for the upcoming weekend.

Given the saturated conditions already in place, there is a strong possibility that the closure of Highway 1 scheduled to go into effect on Wednesday could be in place for an extended time.

Additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Road information and updates can also be found on Caltrans District 5 social media and CHP Traffic Incident Information Page: http://cad.chp.ca.gov, traveler information at: https://www.quickmap@dot.ca.gov

Portion of Highway 1 in Big Sur remains closed – Motorists advised to use an alternate route

– Due to rockslides at multiple locations, a full closure of Highway 1 is in effect from Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County to 2.5 miles south of Big Sur in Monterey County. Motorists are advised to use an alternate route.

Contracted crews arrived Sunday at Paul’s Slide to begin to clear debris from behind the catchment area where rocks and dirt have reached the top of the concrete barriers at four locations.

Caltrans maintenance crews who have been performing daytime storm patrol within the closure parameters will cease these patrols after dark and resume them at first light.
