Portion of Highway 41 to close three days for roadwork
– A three-day, daytime full closure of State Route 41 between Highway 46 East and State Route 33 will begin Tuesday, Aug. 5, as construction continues on the widening of Highway 46 East in the Cholame area, according to Cal Trans.
The closure will be in effect from Tuesday, Aug. 5, through Thursday, Aug. 7, between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. each day.
Travelers headed east on Highway 46 will continue to State Route 33 before reaching State Route 41 at Reef Station. Travelers headed south on State Route 41 will detour onto State Route 33 at Reef Station to Highway 46 East.
Delays are not expected to exceed 45 minutes as a result of the detour. This roadwork is necessary to complete the full-width connection of the new Highway 46/State Route 41 interchange to the existing State Route 41.
The full widening project, which extends from west of Davis Road to west of Antelope Road, is expected to be completed in spring of 2026. All businesses near the Highway 46 East corridor remain open. The contractor for the $147 million project is Atkinson Construction of Irvine, Calif.
This phase follows five completed widening phases of Highway 46 East from Paso Robles to the Highway 46/State Route 41 interchange. The $124 million widening from near the Shandon Rest Area to east of the Jack Ranch Café was completed in 2025. The $47 million widening from McMillan Canyon Road to Lucy Brown Road was completed in 2019. The $38 million widening from Almond Drive to McMillan Canyon Road was completed in 2016. The $54 million widening from Geneseo Road to east of Almond Drive was completed in 2014. The $30 million widening from Airport Road to Geneseo Road was completed in 2010.
