Prescribed burn at Montana De Oro scheduled today
Burn will enhance health of native plant communities, promote species diversity, Cal Fire says
–On Tuesday, Dec. 15, Cal Fire will conduct a prescribed burn on up to 62 acres of coastal scrub and grassland on the coastal terrace west of Pecho Valley Road, south of Spooner’s Cove and north of Coon Creek in Montana de Oro State park, between the communities of Avila Beach and Los Osos.
Due to smoke and other impacts, the “west side” bluff and deer trails will be closed from 7 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14 through 7 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16. The “east-side” trails including Oates, Valencia, Coon Creek, Reservoir Flats, Rattlesnake, Badger and other impacted trails will be evaluated for possible opening on Wednesday.
This burn is part of the prescribed fire program for vegetation management. This burn will enhance the health of the native plant communities, encourage increased species diversity, and maintain open grassland areas within the larger areas of coastal scrub, according to Cal Fire.
The operation will be a joint effort of California Department of Parks and Recreation in cooperation with the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), and the San Luis Obispo Air Pollution Control District.
Burning will not occur if a burn ban is in effect or if the weather or brush conditions are not conducive to burning.
