Prescribed burn operations planned in Morro Bay State Park

prescribed burn SLO county

–California State Parks, in cooperation with the Morro Bay Fire Department, CAL FIRE, and the Air Pollution Control District, will be conducting planned burns in the Morro Bay State Park campground, in the day-use area, and on Black Hill, as well as at the San Simeon upper campground and in the forest north of the Centrally Grown restaurant within Hearst San Simeon State Park. The burns will occur between March 20 and April 13 as conditions allow.

These pile burns are part of the prescribed fire program for fuel reduction and forest management in the Monterey pine forests of Morro Bay State Park and Hearst San Simeon State Park. The forests are suffering from pine pitch disease and drought stress. This burn will attempt to reduce fuel loads within the forest to protect state facilities and residential areas while also disposing of large quantities of wood felled in recent storms.

Burning will not occur if permits, weather, or air quality conditions are not favorable.
