Prescribed burn planned near Pozo

–Cal Fire, in cooperation with local ranchers, will conduct a 300 acre prescribed burn on Friday, Nov. 6, 2015. The burn is located nine miles northeast of Pozo and 12 miles northwest of California Valley. Eight fire engines, four hand crews, two bulldozers, and one helicopter will be assigned to the burn along with two engines from the United States Forest Service Los Padres National Forest.Cal Fire reduces paramedics to Carissa Plain

This burn is being conducted as part of the Cal Fire Vegetation Management Program and is intended to reduce hazardous vegetation in an area prone to large wildfires and also to improve range quality for livestock and wildlife.

People in the La Panza and California Valley area and/or traveling Highway 58 and Pozo Road may see smoke from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the day of the burn. In the unlikely event you smell smoke, county officials urge you to take common sense precautions to reduce any harmful health effects such as avoiding strenuous outdoor activity and/or remaining indoors as much as possible. These precautions are especially important for children, the elderly and people with respiratory and heart conditions. Traffic along Pozo Road three to five miles southwest of Highway 58 may be delayed during active burning adjacent to the roadway.

This prescribed burn was planned and coordinated with the San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District and the California Air Resources Board in order to minimize the smoke impacts on surrounding communities. The burn is dependent on whether and air quality conditions that are favorable for smoke dispersal. If the conditions are not as desired, the burn will be postponed to a future date.

County officials will continue to closely monitor air pollution levels throughout our region and provide updated forecasts on the APCD website slocleanair.org or by calling (805) 781-4390.
