Recycling program seeks volunteers across SLO County

Recycling outreach events planned from Nipomo to Cambria

    – The Integrated Waste Management Authority is seeking volunteers for its new Recycling Ambassadors Program in San Luis Obispo County.

Officials said volunteers will help event attendees sort waste properly during events across the county while promoting composting and food waste recycling.

The program is intended for residents seeking volunteer hours, community involvement, and opportunities to support local environmental efforts.

Officials said food waste and recyclable materials generated at local events and in homes throughout San Luis Obispo County are sent to local processing facilities to help preserve natural resources and support the local economy.

The Recycling Ambassadors pilot program is scheduled to begin June 30, with events planned from Nipomo to Cambria.

Residents interested in volunteering can find additional information at IWMA Recycling Ambassadors Program.

The Integrated Waste Management Authority was formed in 1994 by San Luis Obispo County, local cities, and community service districts to manage regional solid waste programs. The public agency represents 20 jurisdictions and oversees 44 solid waste and recycling programs serving more than 282,000 residents.

Science Discovery provides educational outreach programs related to recycling, water conservation, and stormwater pollution prevention throughout the Central Coast.

Officials said Science Discovery partners with agencies to deliver kindergarten through 12th-grade educational programs reaching more than 30,000 students annually. The company also provides technical support to businesses in San Luis Obispo County related to compliance with California recycling laws and reporting requirements to CalRecycle.
