Report: Police investigate metal spikes puncturing tires in Paso Robles
Reports have mentioned as many as 50 spikes found in a single area
– Authorities in Paso Robles are investigating a series of incidents involving small metal spikes puncturing drivers’ tires across various parts of the city, according to a report by KSBY.
Paso Robles resident Bob Rollins said he encountered the issue while driving on Kiler Canyon Road last Wednesday. After hearing a noise that sounded like metal, he stopped and found a sharp metal object embedded in one of his tires.
Rollins is one of several residents who have experienced similar problems recently. An employee at Anthony’s Tire Store in Paso Robles, Sterling Hayden, said the business has seen 15 customers with the same type of tire damage. In some cases, vehicles have had more than one spike lodged in a single tire or in multiple tires.
The metal objects, described as caltrops, are shaped in a way that allows at least one spike to remain upright regardless of how they land. Some individuals believe the objects may have been deliberately sharpened and placed on the road.
According to Hayden, reports have mentioned as many as 50 spikes found in a single area. Affected locations include Golden Hill Road, Creston Road, First Street, Vine Street, and areas around Kiler Canyon Road. One of the devices was retrieved from a vehicle that had exited Highway 101 en route to Cambria.
In one case, the damage was minor enough to repair, but other drivers have reportedly had to fully replace their tires.
The Paso Robles Police Department confirmed that it is actively investigating the incidents. Officials said there is currently no indication that any specific location is being targeted.
Authorities are asking residents to report any suspicious activity they observe in their neighborhoods.
