Residents reminded to avoid draining pools into storm drains
City encourages use of grass or soil for drainage
– As summer approaches, the City of Paso Robles is reminding pool-owning residents to practice responsible pool maintenance, including proper draining procedures, to help protect the local environment.
City officials advise that water in swimming pools often contains chemicals and debris that, if not managed properly, can negatively impact ecosystems and water sources.
Residents are encouraged to drain pools during dry weather to avoid excess runoff. The city recommends avoiding direct drainage into storm drains or natural bodies of water. Instead, residents should drain water onto permeable surfaces such as grass or soil, allowing natural filtration.
For pools treated with chemicals, the city advises diluting or neutralizing chemicals before draining in order to prevent harm to aquatic life. Residents are also encouraged to use filtration systems to remove debris and contaminants before releasing water.
Regular pool maintenance can also reduce the need for frequent draining and lessen environmental strain.
