–The Atascadero Chamber of Commerce has announced the recipients of the award for 2015 Atascadero Citizens of the Year: Robyn and Keith Schmidt.
The Schmidts are owners of K-Man Cycle and Run. These two individuals, “have huge hearts that continually give to both the young and old without any expectations.” The couple are active in local events through sponsorship, volunteerism, and or participation.
The All Comers Track and Field Meet is an example of the dedication and joy that these two individuals bring to the lives of those in Atascadero. As the founders and directors, they have had over 300 participants in one evening and every year the event just continues to grow.
The two are involved in many more local events and charities. As Robyn put it “I’m kind of a perpetual volunteer.” Every year these two also orchestrate the Hares and Hounds 5K and even make all of the awards by hand that are handed out. They lead a North County triathlon and multi-sports athletics club, volunteer at the Wildflower Triathlon, and coach junior-high aged runners to prepare them for high school running. Additionally, they both coach other non-running sports including basketball and volleyball.
Outside of sporting endeavors, they support the Atascadero Firefighters Association, help support the Friends of the Library, and assist the Committee for Atascadero Public Schools to raise money for the teachers. Recently, Keith received the 2014 Champion of the Community Award from the District 8 of the California Park and Recreation Society.
The couple will be honored at the chamber’s annual dinner on Jan. 23, at Spring Hill Suites by Marriott, in Atascadero from 6–10 p.m.
