San Luis Obispo Airport reminds travelers of REAL ID deadline

Federal requirement intended to increase security at airports and federal buildings

    – The San Luis Obispo County Airport is reminding travelers that beginning May 7, all passengers aged 18 and older must present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, or another acceptable form of identification such as a passport, to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.

This federal requirement, issued by the Department of Homeland Security, is intended to increase security at airports and federal buildings. REAL ID-compliant cards are marked with a star in the upper right-hand corner. In California, the REAL ID includes a gold bear with a white star.

“With the enforcement date rapidly approaching, we encourage all travelers to verify their identification and ensure they are prepared for these new requirements,” said Courtney Johnson, director of airports. “Obtaining a REAL ID now will help avoid potential travel disruptions.”

To obtain a REAL ID in California, residents must gather documentation proving identity, Social Security number, and California residency. Examples include a valid passport or birth certificate, a Social Security card or W-2 form, and two documents showing a California address, such as utility bills or lease agreements.

Applicants must complete an online application at realid.dmv.ca.gov and then schedule an appointment at a local Department of Motor Vehicles office, bringing all required documents for verification.

Travelers are encouraged to plan ahead and ensure they meet the requirements before the May 7 deadline. Additional information about acceptable identification and the application process is available at realid.dmv.ca.gov.
