San Luis Obispo Art Museum exhibit calls for middle school artists

–The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art (SLOMA) is calling for artwork from local middle school students for the winter exhibition of Awaken. The countywide student visual arts program is a partnership with the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education where local students have a chance to create and display art at the museum.

SLOMA hopes to awaken creativity in local middle schools by giving students a chance to explore their artistic expression and create an art piece that reveals how nature influences their lives.

“These students have the opportunity to learn more about the art world, show the community their artwork and really feel what it’s like to be an artist,” said Karen Kile, SLOMA executive director. “We’re excited to see how nature will inspire them.”

This is the second exhibition in a series of three. The first exhibition ran in November and was a huge success. There were more than 70 submissions from high school students around the county and some pieces were sold to the public.

The deadline for art submissions is Jan. 27. There is a limit of two artworks per student. SLOMA accepts paintings, drawings, photos, hand-pulled prints, ceramics, digital art, fiber art, videos and sculptures as submissions, but none can exceed 24 inches in any direction or weigh more than 20 pounds.

Artwork does not have to be for sale. SLOMA will retain 50-percent commission on any artwork sold.

Deliver artwork to SLOMA, located at 1010 Broad St., San Luis Obispo, January 23-27 between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., or by special appointment. North County students can deliver to PRYAF, located at 3201 Spring St., Paso Robles, on Jan. 22-24. The nature-themed exhibition will run Feb. 1-17.
