San Luis Obispo to host annual Arbor Day celebration
—The community is invited to celebrate San Luis Obispo’s 35th Annual Arbor Day on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Santa Rosa Park from 10 a.m. to noon. The city has once again been named a Tree City USA honoring its commitment to community forestry by the Arbor Day Foundation.
At the event, students from local elementary schools who participated in the city-sponsored Arbor Day Art contest will have their winning entries on display. The San Luis Obispo City Council and Tree Committee members will present the winners of the contest with certificates and t-shirts.
The community can also help Urban Forest staff plant trees and learn proper care techniques from the city’s certified arborists. There will be fun and educational booths and coffee, beverages and breakfast snacks will be provided.
The first Arbor Day was held in Nebraska during the spring of 1872. They needed the ground to thaw in order to dig. In our hot dry region, it is better to plant trees in the fall. Shorter cooler days and the chance of rain give them the opportunity to establish before going through our long dry summers. San Luis Obispo’s Arbor Day is now held in the fall when less water is needed survival rates are higher for newly planted trees. You can also meet “Annie Oak Leaf” and members of the City Urban Forest staff at Farmers’ Market Thursday night Nov. 1.
