San Luis Obispo man arrested for prowling, linked to multiple incidences

Juan Francisco Rodriguez Espino, a 35-year-old resident of San Luis Obispo.

–On Tuesday night at about 11:40 p.m. detectives from the San Luis Obispo Police Department were conducting surveillance in the 900 block of Boysen in response to an increase in prowling incidents being reported.

Juan Francisco Rodriguez Espino, a 35-year-old resident of San Luis Obispo, was identified as a suspect after evidence recovered from a peeping/prowling incident was reported to the police department on Nov. 17 in the 800 block of Boysen. During the last ten days detectives worked to gather additional evidence linking Espino to a total of four prowling incidents dating back to October 2018. All the identified incidents occurred in the area surrounding the 800 block Boysen.

During last night’s operation, Espino was followed to the 900 block of Boysen where he was found behind a closed office, hiding in bushes near a window. At this point, it is unclear what Espino’s motivation for being on the property was.

During the three incidents reported dating back to 2018, different women preparing for bed were targeted by a male suspect, believed to be Espino. Investigators believe those incidents were sexually motivated.

Espino was transported to the police department where he was interviewed prior to being booked at San Luis Obispo County Jail. He was booked for prowling with bail set at $2,000.

The Police Department would like to remind residents, especially the student population, to remain vigilant about their personal safety and to immediately report any suspicious activity. Waiting to report activity such as tonight’s greatly impedes our ability to identify and capture predators like Espino. Additionally, keeping blinds into private areas closed decreases your risk of being targeted.
