San Luis Obispo Police Chief awarded ‘2018 Congressional Women of the Year’

— Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-Santa Barbara) recently honored San Luis Obispo Police Chief Deanna Cantrell as one of the winners of the 2018 Congressional Women of the Year.
Chief Cantrell joins four other women as honorees in an award that marks the conclusion of Women’s History Month.
Chief Cantrell is one of less than 2-percent of female police chiefs across the nation. Through the Police and Community Together (PACT) Program, Chief Cantrell has improved understanding between the police department and local action groups representing marginalized communities. She also started the Policing Education And Community Engagement (PEACE), a series of community workshops to increase education between community groups and law enforcement.
“Chief Cantrell has strived to support every member of her community and her compassion and commitment to service makes her a role model and inspiration to the community,” stated an announcement made by Rep. Carbajal’s office.
“We are all very proud of Chief Cantrell, and the honor is well deserved,” said San Luis Obispo City Manager Derek Johnson. “Not only has she improved safety in our city, she has made successful efforts to bridge communication between different community groups and the police force.”
The annual Congressional Women of the Year Award honors exceptional women across the 24th Congressional District who have left a positive impact on their communities. Winners span a variety of backgrounds and professions and represent the thousands of women working to improve quality of life on the Central Coast.
“The recipients of this year’s Congressional Women of the Year Award are all doing incredible work to improve the quality of life on the Central Coast, from caring for our homeless population to helping our communities through devastating natural disasters,” Rep. Carbajal said. “It is a privilege to recognize these women leaders for their contributions to our community.”
Rep. Carbajal will recognize the winners by entering a special written tribute for each woman into the official Congressional Record, preserving their stories and their impact on the community.
