San Luis Obispo Symphony board president earns statewide honor for volunteer leadership
Award honors individuals and volunteer organizations that contribute to the success and sustainability of orchestras and classical music organizations
– The Association of California Symphony Orchestras has named Stefan Podell, board president of the San Luis Obispo Symphony, a recipient of its 2025 Most Valuable Player Volunteer Award.
The award will be presented during the association’s annual conference in Costa Mesa, scheduled for Aug. 7–9.
Established in 1996, the award honors individuals and volunteer organizations that contribute to the success and sustainability of orchestras and classical music organizations across California and the western United States.
Under Podell’s leadership, the San Luis Obispo Symphony has seen increased board participation, stronger fundraising results, and greater public visibility. He revived the organization’s fundraising golf tournament and restructured the annual gala, relocating it to a new venue and date.
Podell keeps the board focused with regular communication, creative fundraising tools, and strategic planning support. He has served on the Symphony’s board for six years and is active on several committees.
A professional composer, Podell has donated original orchestral works for auction at the Symphony’s gala in two consecutive years, raising $26,000 and $20,000. In 2025, he helped secure a $20,000 matching gift from current and former board members.
He also contributed in-kind services, including a full redesign of the Symphony’s website. In addition, he has created pre-concert slideshows, introduced performances on stage, and supported marketing and development strategies.
“Stefan Podell is a truly exceptional volunteer leader,” said Emily Reneau, director of development at the San Luis Obispo Symphony. “As board president, his visionary leadership and boundless enthusiasm have transformed our board culture and deepened community engagement. He leads by example, inspiring board members to not only attend and support events but to become active, visible champions for the arts.”
Sarah Weber, executive director of the Association of California Symphony Orchestras, said, “During good times and challenging times alike, orchestras rely on volunteers to keep the music playing. Stefan exemplifies the deep commitment, vision, and generosity that make volunteers indispensable to our field. He is a passionate ambassador, strategic thinker, and devoted advocate who helps ensure that the San Luis Obispo Symphony remains strong and vibrant both on stage and in the community.”
The San Luis Obispo Symphony, founded in 1954, is the Central Coast’s professional orchestra. It presents classical and pops concerts primarily at Cal Poly’s Performing Arts Center and runs a youth symphony, educational programs, and community events including “Pops by the Sea” in Avila Beach and the annual Symphony Ball.
The Association of California Symphony Orchestras was founded in 1969 and represents more than 130 orchestras and music organizations in California and the western United States. Its annual awards program highlights contributions to the orchestral field.
