San Luis Obispo to host 9/11 Day of Remembrance

–Reflections on “Humble,” bagpipes, and a bell ceremony will highlight A Day of Remembrance Sept. 11 at the San Luis Obispo World Trade Center Memorial. The public is invited to attend the annual ceremony, located at Fire Station 1 at 2160 Santa Barbara Avenue from 8 to 9:30 a.m. The day of remembrance is hosted by the City of San Luis Obispo in partnership with the American Legion Post 66 and the SLO City Union 3523.

It’s been 18 years since 9/11. Among those who died that day were 403 emergency workers who responded to the tragedy.

This year’s ceremony will feature the posting of colors from the Honor Guard, artwork created San Luis Coastal Unified School District students, and reflections on “Humble” presented by San Luis Obispo High School students.

The memorial, designed by artist Kathleen Caricof and dedicated in 2015, pays tribute to the emergency workers who died with 403 metal posts embedded in an arc and features a 1,500-pound steel beam from the World Trade Center.

Parking for the ceremony is limited, so residents are encouraged to walk, bike or carpool, and bring their own water bottle.
