San Miguel Community Service District to vote on water rate increase

–The San Miguel Community Services District is hosting a special meeting on March 9 to consider increasing water rates. The meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the SMCSD Boardroom, located at 1150 Mission St. The meeting is open to the public.

Water rate studies are done every five years, and the most recent one, completed in Jan., predicts a budget deficit. According to Fire Chief and Community Services District General Manager Rob Roberson, the deficit is forecasted because the CSD chose not to raise rates during recession years, coupled with needed infrastructure repairs and a growing population.

There are two ways that rates are calculated. There is a monthly charge for being hooked up to the system as well as a volumetric charge based on usage. See the charts below for projected increases:

Most residential homes have a 5/8-inch meter. Homes built after 2010 are required to have sprinkler systems for fire and have a larger 1-inch meter.

A CCF stands for one hundred cubic feet of water.
