School district launches new early college program

Partnership with Cuesta College creates structured pathway to college coursework

Paso Robles Joint Unified School District will launch a new Early College program in fall 2026, expanding opportunities for students to earn college credit while completing their high school diploma requirements.

Developed in partnership with Cuesta College, the program will provide students at Paso Robles High School and Independence High School with a structured pathway to complete college coursework while enrolled in high school.

While the district has long offered dual-enrollment opportunities, officials said the Early College model provides a more systematic approach with clear course pathways designed to maximize college credits earned before graduation.

With careful planning, students may be able to complete up to two years of college coursework while still in high school, giving them a head start toward a certificate, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree.

“Early College creates a clear pathway for students to accelerate their educational goals allowing them to graduate from high school with an associate degree,” said PRJUSD Superintendent Jennifer Loftus. “By expanding access to college coursework we’re opening doors to future opportunities while reducing both the time and cost required to earn a college degree.”

Students enrolled in the program will take Cuesta College courses while attending Paso Robles High School or Independence High School. Participants will also be required to enroll in a dedicated support period during the school day that provides structured time for completing coursework, accessing assistance, and staying on track toward academic goals.

The program may also allow students to take a third dual-enrollment course, expanding beyond the previous two-course limit.

District officials said students will earn transferable college credit while gaining experience with college-level expectations and continuing to receive support through their high schools.

“The Early College Program will allow increased opportunities to access college-level coursework while in high school,” said Alexandra Thompson, a school counselor at Paso Robles High School. “PRHS is at the forefront of high schools in our county with Dual Enrollment and continues to pave the way for increased access, further promoting College and Career Readiness.”

A limited number of seats remain available for students interested in participating during the 2026-27 school year. Families seeking additional information are encouraged to contact their school counselor.

Paso Robles Joint Unified School District serves more than 6,400 students throughout northern San Luis Obispo County.
