–At the most recent Paso Robles Joint Unified School District board meeting, Chief Business Officer Brad Pawlowski presented the 1st interim report for the 2018-2019 fiscal school year. It projected the district’s reserve at the end of this fiscal year to be $1,363,050 or 1.78-percent of the annual operating budget, a sharp decline from 10-percent in 2015. In the next fiscal year, 2019-2020, the reserve drops to $782,363 or 0.99-percent. For the following fiscal year, 2020-2021, if the district operates at its current levels, the reserve will drop to $-631,804 or -0.78-percent.

To correct the situation, the board will consider a resolution confirming the district’s commitment to fiscal solvency. The resolution was drafted at the request of the county. By the end of February the district must identify an estimated $2.1 million in cuts from next year’s budget, according to reports. During the 2019-20 fiscal year, officials will also need to find an additional $800,000 in reductions from the 2020-21 budget, reports say.

The cuts will need to come from a variety of places, including a potential reduction of faculty and staff.
