School district receive grant for summer algebra program
Program will serve about 60 middle and high school students
– Paso Robles Joint Unified School District has been awarded a $30,000 grant from the California State University Chancellor’s Office to host a Summer Algebra Institute, a five-week academic enrichment program designed to strengthen students’ math skills and prepare them for college.
Through the grant-funded program, the district will provide incoming middle and high school students with instruction in mathematics and quantitative reasoning, along with hands-on learning experiences and exposure to college pathways.
The Summer Algebra Institute will serve about 60 students, who are nominated by teachers based on academic readiness and potential. Students will participate in cohorts of about 20 to allow instructors to monitor progress and tailor instruction.
In addition to math instruction, students will participate in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics activities designed to apply math concepts. Activities may include coding, drone programming, and other applied learning experiences.
The program also includes college and career readiness components. Students will participate in college knowledge workshops and visit a California State University campus to learn about academic programs, student life, and available resources.
“We’re proud to bring this opportunity to Paso Robles students,” said Jennifer Loftus. “Programs like the Summer Algebra Institute reflect our commitment to empowering every student to discover their strengths and chart a path forward. By combining high-quality instruction, hands-on learning, and connections to college pathways, we’re helping students build the knowledge and confidence they need to thrive in their future.”
Participating teachers will attend training at California State University, Fullerton to prepare to deliver the program curriculum and support students during the summer session.
The program will run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Lewis Flamson Junior High School from June 10 through July 10.
Students are currently being nominated by teachers, and a waitlist has been established if additional spots become available. Families may add students in grades 7 and above to the waitlist online.
