School district seeking candidates to fill vacant seat on school board

–The Paso Robles Joint Unified School District (PRJUSD) Board of Trustees is seeking candidates to fill a seat left vacant by a recent resignation. Applications are now available and are being accepted through Friday, October 20. The provisional appointee will serve until the 2018 election.

Applicants must meet the following qualifications, as stated in Education Code 35107: “Any person, regardless of sex, who is 18 years of age or older, a citizen of the state, a resident of the school district, a registered voter, and who is not disqualified by the Constitution or laws of the state from holding a civil office, is eligible to be elected or appointed a member of a governing board of a school district without further qualifications. An employee of a school district may not be sworn into office as an elected or appointed member of that school district’s governing board unless and until he or she resigns as an employee. If the employee does not resign, the employment will automatically terminate upon being sworn into office.”

To be considered as a candidate, applicants must submit a qualification form and application. Both forms are available on the PRJUSD website, www.pasoschools.org/board, or by visiting the district office located at 800 Niblick Road between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The qualification form and application must be received by PRJUSD, either in person or electronically, no later than 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20. Forms can be emailed to Jenny Johnson at jjohnson@pasoschools.org.

Any interested candidates are invited to attend an orientation meeting on Oct. 16 at 5:30 p.m. in the PRJUSD Board Room. District representatives will provide an overview of PRJUSD including guiding principles, instructional practices, and district initiatives. This meeting is not required. Candidates will have the opportunity to ask questions.

All qualified applicants will be interviewed on Monday, Oct. 30, beginning at 10 a.m. during an open session board meeting in the PRJUSD Board Room.

The PRJUSD Board of Trustees unanimously voted to make a provisional appointment instead of holding a special election. The special election would cost upwards of $155,000 and would have to be held in the spring. The winner of that election would only have served a few months until the general election in November.

For any questions regarding the process, please contact the district office by calling 805-769-1000 or emailing jjohnson@pasoschools.org.
