Search for a new city manager begins

At Tuesday night’s city council meeting, the council began discussing what actions should be taken to conduct a search for a replacement for Jim App, the current city manager who recently announced his intent to retire at year’s end.

“This is a little bit different than hiring that we have done in the past,” said Mayor Steve Martin. “This is a very important position that works closely with the council.” Martin suggested the use of a professional search firm, and also suggested that some vessel for public feedback be made available as well.

All council members agreed that the use of a professional hiring firm was a good idea considering the importance of the position of city manager. “Most higher level companies use professional hiring firms to find suitable candidates,” said Councilman Fred Strong.

Councilman Steve Gregory said, “We need to make sure that the search is thorough and refined.” Councilman John Hamon agreed, and also agreed that something should be created to collect public input, like a webpage or a survey.

The council unanimously agreed that the route of both hiring a professional firm and gathering public input would be the best course of action in finding a suitable replacement for App.
