Senate housing leader to speak at county housing summit

Senator Scott Wiener.

–On Friday, the Housing Coalition of the Central Coast is bringing the community together for a conference focused on comprehensive, long-term planning and solutions to the housing crisis on the Central Coast.

Held at Grace Central Coast 12 – 2 p.m., the event features keynote speaker Senator Scott Wiener. Known for his leadership on the Senate Housing Committee, Wiener has authored SB 50, a bill to increase housing density near major transit lines.

Following his presentation, SLO County Administrative Officer Wade Horton will moderate a panel discussion in which Wiener and experts in water and transportation will discuss topics including legislation that could impact housing, how roads and water impact housing availability and price, and creative solutions to infrastructure planning and funding challenges. The experts will help explain how the intersection between transportation, water and policy affects housing. More than 300 community members are expected to attend.

This is the fifth housing summit and is sponsored by platinum sponsor California Association of Realtors. The Housing Coalition of the Central Coast includes the Economic Vitality Corporation, the Home Builders Association of the Central Coast and the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce. The coalition aims to bring the community together to exchange information and work toward collaborative solutions to create housing opportunities on the Central Coast.

In addition to Wiener, expert panelists include: Newsha Ajami, director of Urban Water Policy with Stanford University; Carl Guardino, president of Silicon Valley Leadership Group; Laura Bliss, CityLab journalist; Wade Horton, SLO County administrative officer; and Jeanne Radsick, director and president-elect of the California Association of Realtors.
