–The Senior Volunteer Services and Central Coast Community Volunteers held their 44th annual recognition brunch at the Paso Robles Golf Club on Tuesday, May 17. During the ceremony, the Paso Robles Senior Center was named “Station of the Year” by Retired and Senior Volunteer Services of San Luis Obispo and Northern Santa Barbara County. Senior center volunteer Kooki Peters received the Carol Conway Spirit of Volunteerism Award from and was named the Paso Robles Senior Center Volunteer of the Year at the annual Senior Volunteer BBQ held Saturday, May 14.

Approximately 100 volunteers perform important tasks to keep the senior centre running smoothly, including leading classes, working in the senior center kitchen, delivering meals, working at the reception desk, overseeing the library, and conducting health screenings.

Operations Coordinator Marty Durret said it was an honor to be considered for the award, let alone to receive it. “The Paso Robles Senior Center is one of the most active senior centers in Central California,” she said. “We offer a wonderful variety of activities for many diverse areas of interest that promote personal growth and respond to a wide variety of interests for independent seniors.”

Kooki Peters, who has been involved with the senior center for many years, has dedicated her time as a volunteer since her retirement as head cook for the Senior Nutrition Program at the center in 2011. Peters volunteers at the senior center reception desk for six hours each week and also tracks the attendance statistics for the center, makes sure that necessary center supplies are kept in stock, and cleans many of the center’s linens. During tax time, the center offers tax-preparation assistance and Peters oversees the scheduling and follow-up of 850 reservations.

Senior Volunteer Services Director Marie Brinkmeyer said Peters is a tireless worker and supporter of the Paso Robles Senior Center in so many ways. “During tax time she arranged for a shut-in to have tax preparation help in her home,” she said. “Kooki also obtained a motorized scooter for a senior and had it delivered to the woman’s residence. Kooki’s dedication and commitment stand out among those who know and work with her.”

The Paso Robles Senior Center is located at 270 Scott Street in Paso Robles and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (805) 237-3880.
