Series of prescribed burns start this week

–Cal Fire plans to conduct five prescribed burns over the next 2 to 3 weeks beginning Thursday.

A brief description of each is below:

Station 98 Training Burn – Approximately 10 acres of grass fuels at the Cal Fire facility off Airport Road in Paso Robles will be burned on Thursday 6/20/19. Smoke may be present from approximately 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Camp SLO – Approximately 230 acres of grass fuels on the Foxtrot Range of Camp SLO will be burned on Friday 6/21/19. This burn is necessary to prevent an unplanned ignition that could occur from upcoming live munitions training by the military. Smoke will be visible in the San Luis Obispo area from approximately 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Shandon Training Burn – Approximately 40 acres of grass fuels will be burned on Saturday 6/22/19 in the southeast corner of Shandon. This project will provide firefighters with live fire training opportunities. Smoke will be visible southeast of Shandon from approximately 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Gilardi – Approximately 326 acres of grass fuels will be burned at the SLO Sportsman’s Park off Gilardi Road on Tuesday 7/2/19. This burn is conducted annually to provide live fire training and to reduce the fire hazard at this public recreational facility.

Parkhill Maintenance Burn – Approximately 26 acres of light fuels will be burned during the week of June 24 2019 to maintain an existing fuelbreak off 7 Oaks Road. Heavy fuels in this area were removed several years ago in cooperation with the County Fire Safe Council and prescribed fire is the most suitable tool for maintaining these areas.

All prescribed burn projects are planned in coordination with APCD. If adequate firefighting resources are not available due to fire activity in the region, or if weather conditions for any of these projects are not optimal for safe burning and good smoke dispersal, burning will be postponed.
