Sewage back-up at Bauer Speck forces administrators to send home students Monday

Clean-up of contaminated portable will take two weeks

–A sewage back-up in a portable at the temporary Bauer Speck campus forced administrators to send pre-schoolers home on Monday. School officials believe the back-up occurred because of heavy use of War Memorial Stadium restrooms during Friday night’s Bearcat football game. The cause was a crushed sewer line on 26th Street. Water and sewage spilled on 26th Street and Spring, which was to be paved Saturday morning.

The city is in the process of replacing that segment of sewer line. School administrators met with the city officials Monday, and the the city agreed to adjust their schedule to replace the remaining 20 feet beginning 6:30 p.m., Tuesday night. That is expected to correct the sewage back-up problem.

Saturday, Servpro sent two vehicles to begin cleaning up the contaminated portable, Room 26. That clean-up operation will take about two weeks. As a result, the school district’s Early Learning Academy Preschool was moved back to the old campus on Vine Street.

Monday morning, Bauer Speck pre-school teachers moved classroom materials from the portable classroom to the old Bauer Speck campus on Vine Street. Pre-schoolers will attend class at the old campus until the portable next to Flamson Middle School is cleaned and disinfected.

Last week, Superintendent Dr. Curt Dubost said moving Bauer Speck Elementary School into the portables next to Flamson Middle Schools was problematic, “Yes, there will be problems, but to delay school would cause more problems than it would solve, and so we made the decision to move forward.”

Dr. Dubost accepted responsibility for issues related to the move, however, he only became superintendent on July 1. The move-in difficulties were exacerbated by city roadwork on Spring Street, and a heat wave during the teachers’ 11th hour relocation.
