Shandon loses to St. Monica

–The Shandon High School boys basketball team lost a second round playoff game to St. Monica Friday night, 56-44. The Outlaws kept the game close for three quarters, but St. Monica hit some key three-point field goals in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Shandon residents packed the 60-year-old gym for the playoff game Friday night. St. Monica is a private Catholic school in Santa Monica. The original school was founded in 1899. Only a few Mariner fans made the drive from Santa Monica.

Shandon Coach Jose Diaz said his Outlaws played with a lot of heart. He said two of his starters were freshman, so the team will continue to improve.

Superintendent Dr. Theresa Taylor said the school is proud of the team, and the contributions the players make on the high school campus.

Basketball standout Danny Diaz, for instance, recently won the county-wide DAR essay contest on what freedom means to him..
