Shandon School District selects new superintendent

–The Shandon Joint Unified School District Trustees has offered the Superintendent/Principal position to Kristina Benson, Templeton Middle
School Principal. She is replacing Teresa Taylor, who is retiring at the end of the current school year. Benson’s contract will be presented for approval at the June 19, 2018 board meeting. After an extensive search process, the Board chose Benson for her broad and established instructional leadership roles across multiple grade levels, strength in collaboration with the community, and focus on academic excellence. Her anticipated start date is July 1, 2018.

Benson has nearly two decades of experience in public education as a teacher, site director, assistant principal, and principal. Prior to establishing a career in education, Benson worked in the laboratory sciences serving as a pathology assistant, assistant forensic serologist, and forensic alcohol analyst. This experience was the foundation for Benson’s development of the Templeton High School Biotechnology Institute, including a college preparatory forensic science class.

She earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and is completing her doctorate in Educational Leadership at California Lutheran University.

Benson has a strong personnel background with extensive experience in budgeting, employee relations, implementing district standards, and implementation of professional development for faculty and staff. Local and state level administrators have recognized Benson’s leadership abilities through district, county, and state committees, as well as the serving as a local representative for the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA). San Luis Obispo County Superintendent, James Brescia commented; “The Shandon trustees have selected a highly skilled and dedicated north county educator to serve as their next superintendent/principal.” Nearly two dozen candidates applied for the position and the trustees interviewed six finalists before selecting Kristina Benson.
