Sheriff’s Honor Farm women sew afghans, lap quilts for Stand Strong

women's honor farm slo donation–On Monday Dec. 10, at 2 p.m., the Women’s Honor Farm presented over 150 afghans and lap quilts made by inmates to Stand Strong. Stand Strong’s mission is to support survivors and end domestic violence in San Luis Obispo County. Formerly known as the Women’s Shelter, Stand Strong has been serving the community since 1977. Karen Borges-Director of Development and Communications, Sheridan Riolo-Prevention Coordinator, and Aline Deluca-VIP AmeriCorps Volunteer received the handcrafted items.

The Stand Strong Program is committed to providing comprehensive services for victims of intimate partner violence and child abuse in our community. Stand Strong relies on community support in order to provide services which include: 24–hour Crisis Line, Emergency Shelter, Counseling, Legal Services, Support Services, and Training and Presentations. In the past year, Stand Strong counselors saw 437 clients for group and individual counselling sessions which included 290 children. “We are so excited to be a part of this presentation and so proud that the women worked so hard for our families and children,” said Karen Borges.

“Many of our female inmates have been victims of domestic violence or child abuse. Sewing the quilts for those with similar experiences has been a rewarding experience and helps them feel connected. Quilts are very useful during counseling sessions as they offer comfort, warmth, and safety. We hope the clients will cherish these gifts long after receiving services from Stand Strong,” said Senior Correctional Deputy Piotrowski who helps coordinate donations and presentations such as this.
