Sheriff’s office Christmas bike giveaway seeking helmet donations

donated bicycles–The Season of Giving is here! The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office Christmas Bike Program is currently seeking helmet donations for the Christmas Bike Giveaway which will be held on Friday, Dec. 15 at 10 a.m. at the Sheriff’s Honor Farm, 1585 Kansas Avenue, San Luis Obispo.

This program was set up 28 years ago to promote the holiday spirit by giving away refurbished bicycles and new helmets to underprivileged children in San Luis Obispo County. Due to the generosity of the people of this County, the program has continued to be a big success. The Sheriff’s Office is holding an early kick off to the event on Thurs, Dec 7 at 6 p.m. at the San Luis Obispo Farmer’s Market thanks to The Sandlot Group of San Luis Obispo. The Sandlot Group is local non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of sport and overall health for youth in our community and have graciously agreed to purchase $10,000 worth of bikes from Arts Cyclery to donate to the Sheriff’s Office Bicycle Program.

The Sheriff’s Office Honor Farm is the assembly point for bicycles that are donated and in need of repair. Inmates who are housed at the Honor Farm make the repairs. The program instills in the inmates a positive work ethic, self-respect and a sense of worth to the community. This year the Sheriff’s Office is partnering with Bike SLO County, who provided a professional bike mechanic to mentor the inmates on repairing bicycles. Bike SLO County will be on-site at the December 15 event to provide helmet adjustments and talk to children about bike safety.

Individuals and businesses who wish to donate children’s bicycles helmets can bring the helmet to any of the Sheriff’s Office Patrol stations or to the Sheriff’s Honor Farm. The program is no longer accepting adult bicycles and will take only children’s bicycles.

To make a monetary contribution for the purchase of parts or helmets, please send a check to:
