Sheriff’s office gives away 150 bicycles to local kids

–It’s the most wonderful time of the year at the Sheriff’s Office! Today was the Sheriff’s Office Christmas Bicycle Giveaway. More than 150 bicycles along with helmets were handed out today just in time for Christmas.

This program was set up 28 years ago to promote the holiday spirit by giving away refurbished bicycles and new helmets to children in need in San Luis Obispo County.

The Sheriff’s Office Honor Farm is the assembly point for bicycles that are donated and in need of repair. Inmates who are housed at the Honor Farm make the repairs. The program instills in the inmates a positive work ethic, self-respect and a sense of worth to the community.
We couldn’t do this without our donors, Rita’s Rainbows, The Sandlot Group, and local Target and Walmart stores.

Special thanks goes out to the Sheriff’s Advisory Foundation, Art’s Cyclery and Bike SLO County for all their help with this event.
In all, more than 320 bicycles will be given away this year. It’s all worth it, to see a child’s face light up when they receive a bicycle.
