– October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to acknowledge the impact of domestic violence in the community. In 2023, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office responded to 251 domestic violence calls, resulting in 84 felony arrests and 80 misdemeanor arrests.
Domestic violence, also known as intimate partner violence, affects individuals across all backgrounds and can involve physical, sexual, emotional abuse, and intimidation. Signs of domestic violence may begin with control, threats, or isolation, escalating to physical harm. Without intervention, violent behavior often worsens.
Survivors of domestic violence can find help. It is important to remember that no one is alone, and it is not their fault. According to statistics, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced physical violence by an intimate partner. For immediate danger, individuals should call 911. Those in need of emergency shelter or housing can reach out to Lumina Alliance’s 24-hour crisis line at (805) 545-8888.
The sheriff’s office urges everyone to stay aware and stay safe.
