Sibling artists debut ‘Abstract Sand Stacks’ exhibit

    – Sibling artists Zoya Lopata Dixon and Sam Lopata, collectively known as Seekus, are set to unveil their inaugural exhibit, “Abstract Sand Stacks,” on June 7 as part of SLO County Art’s Art After Dark. The opening reception will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mylr Gallery located at 1238 Monterey Street, San Luis Obispo.

The exhibit delves into the fusion of analog and digital realms, particularly the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) to explore facets of the human experience. Notably, one piece draws inspiration from Darwin’s “On The Origin of Species,” juxtaposing evolutionary biology with AI’s inquiries into humanity’s origins and trajectory, according to the artists.

The showcase comprises several large-scale artworks, including a prominent diptych measuring 72” x 72” inches. These pieces feature Sam Lopata’s graffiti-style handwriting layered with Zoya Lopata Dixon’s distinctive abstract sand stacks. The process involved generating text from AI prompts, followed by Sam’s handwritten background. Zoya then applied abstract designs, traced, and painted them onto the canvas before adding sand, allowing it to dry, and completing the work with a final coat of paint or varnish.

Although raised mere miles apart in Chicago, Zoya and Sam first connected in 2021 after the passing of their father, Daniel. Their collaboration on this exhibit serves not only as an exploration of the human-machine interface but also as a means of deepening their familial bond.

The opening night on June 7 will mark their debut exhibit together, with the artwork remaining on display throughout June and July.
