SLO County Airport to close 55 hours next week for taxiway project

SLO Regional Airport begins runway rehabilitation project

    SLO County Regional Airport.

    – The San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport will close to all air traffic beginning Monday, Sept. 22, at 7 a.m. for airfield improvements and reopen Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m.

The project will reconfigure key intersections on the airport’s primary taxiway to improve aircraft movement, operational efficiency and safety.

The improvements represent a $16.5 million investment in aviation infrastructure. Most of the funding comes from a Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program grant, with matching contributions from the airport.

“Airports are critical infrastructure for our regional economy, connecting businesses, visitors, and residents to opportunities across the state and the nation,” Supervisor Dawn Ortiz-Legg said. “By making these important investments in the airfield, we are not only enhancing aviation safety but also ensuring that the Central Coast remains competitive and accessible for years to come.”

Courtney Johnson, director of airports for San Luis Obispo County, said the project is essential for airport operations.

“Taxiways are the arteries of an airport, guiding every aircraft to and from the runway,” Johnson said. “These improvements will streamline operations and allow us to serve passengers and partners with greater efficiency. We appreciate the cooperation of our community and stakeholders as we complete this essential work.”
