SLO Fire Department seeks community input on public safety priorities

—The City of San Luis Obispo Fire Department (SLOFD) is seeking community input to inform the development of the department’s first Five Year Strategic Plan.

To participate in the SLOFD survey, visit slocity.org/opencityhall. The SLOFD will also host a community meeting on Thursday, April 26 at 4:30 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 2160 Barbara St. to gauge residents’ priorities.

The department developed five strategic directions which will inform the department’s priorities, and department leadership wants SLO residents to help determine the service provided to the community.

“We have a great working draft, developed through employee input,” said Fire Chief Garret Olson. “Now we want to provide an opportunity for our customers – our residents and business community – to share their service expectations of their Fire Department. This is a critical step in the process.”

Residents’ participation will help inform the department’s draft strategic direction including establishing strong community education strategies for increased public safety (such as a citizen fire academy) and meaningful fire prevention programs (such as partnering with property owners and renters to enhance fire safety in the home). The department also seeks feedback on how data is gathered, communicated, and harnessed to make smart decisions.

In support of the City’s Major City Goal of Fiscal Sustainability and Responsibility, the department has similar goals and objectives including reducing long-term costs, maximizing revenue generation and evaluating new ways of doing business. The current list of goals and objectives is available for the community’s review.
