SLO Police offering free bike registration, engraving
Service offered in response to rise in bicycle thefts
–The San Luis Obispo Police Department has seen a significant rise in the number of bicycle thefts recently. They have been working on this problem and while doing so have confiscated a number of bicycles that they cannot find the owners of.
Registering bicycles deters theft and helps locate the bicycle owner in case of loss. Ideally, the owner needs the serial number to report a lost or stolen bicycle to the police, but most people do not have this number readily available. However, when a bicycle is registered and/or engraved police can quickly locate the record, greatly enhancing the investigation.
On Saturday May 14 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. the San Luis Obispo Police Department will register bicycles at the police department. They will also engrave your driver’s license number on your bicycle if you wish. Bicycle registration and engraving programs increase the likelihood of a bicycle being located and returned if lost or stolen.
Citizens who wish to participate in this free program can show up at the police department with their bicycle and driver’s license or state issued id anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on this Saturday.
