SLO Supervisors vote for Solar Energy Day
Community to celebrate June 21 with free Doc Burnstein’s ice cream

The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted in favor of making June 21, 2014 the official Solar Energy Day in SLO County. The resolution was proposed by Solarponics Experience Director Frank Scotti.
The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted in favor of making Saturday, June 21, 2014 the official Solar Energy Day in San Luis Obispo County during their June 3 board meeting. The resolution, proposed by Solarponics Experience Director Frank Scotti, received a round of applause from attendees and board members. Letters expressing support were also received from The Green Energy Cluster, the Community Environmental Council, and the Economic Vitality Corporation of San Luis Obispo County.
“For the past decade CEC has endeavored to shift our region away from fossil fuels and towards a future where 100 percent of the electricity powering our homes, businesses, and cars is generated from clean, renewable, and local sources. It is time the county formally recognizes its leadership in solar energy,” said Jefferson Litten, Community Environmental Council Solarize Program Manager
In 2013, San Luis Obispo County experienced a 41 percent increase in solar energy usage over 2012. Currently, the county is on target to achieve 40 percent growth again in 2014. Supporters would eventually like to see SLO County recognized as Solar County USA, positioning the Central Coast as a champion for energy efficiency.
Website is source for all things solar
In an effort to continue to push SLO County in a solar leadership position, Scotti announced the soft launch of www.solarcountyusa.org, a website designed to become a resource for all things solar. The page was created and is hosted by Solarponics, the longest continuously owned and operated solar energy company in California, to help community members stay up to date on the solar industry here in the county, throughout California, and the nation. Other active supporters of the resolution include First Solar and Mid-American Solar, the owners and operators of the Topaz Solar Farm, one of the largest solar energy plants in the world.
“We estimate that there are at least 20,000 homes in the county that can benefit from solar energy. That equates to about $2 billion in energy cost savings over 25 years. At our current rate of installs, it will take all of the solar energy companies in the area another 20 years to solarize SLO County. We’re just getting started,” said Scotti.

Solarponics has teamed up with Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Lab to create the world’s first “sunshine” flavored ice cream, and will be giving away free servings at Concerts In The Park at Atascadero lake Park on Saturday, June 21.
Celebrate Solar Energy Day & Summer Solstice with Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream
The first SLO County Solar Energy Day will take place June 21, the same day as Summer Solstice, where California’s Central Coast gets nearly 15 hours of sunlight, producing enough energy through solar PV systems to save residents an estimated $10,000.
To celebrate, Solarponics has teamed up with Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Lab to create the world’s first “sunshine” flavored ice cream, and will be giving away free servings at Concerts In The Park at Atascadero Lake Park on Saturday, June 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The plan is to make Solar Energy Day an annual celebration, taking place each year on summer solstice.
