Sports highlights: Bearcats defeat Warriors in soccer action 

Paso Robles High School sports highlights of the week

Boys’ varsity soccer

The Paso Robles boys’ varsity soccer team took a 3-1 victory over Righetti on Friday night.

Jose Mejia, on an assist from Javier Solis, scored the first goal against the Warriors for the Bearcats. Their second goal of the night was scored by Jesus Mendoza on an assist from Alexis Saavedra. Jonathan Jaimes, assisted by Leonardo Anaya, scored the final goal for Paso Robles.

Paso Robles High School, PRHS BearcatsGoalkeeper Victor Rodriguez had two saves for the Bearcats in the first half, while Alexander Aceves had three saves for Paso Robles in the second half.

The varsity Bearcat boys will travel to San Luis Obispo on Wednesday to face the Tigers at 4:30 p.m.

Boys’ junior varsity soccer

The Paso Robles junior varsity boys earned a 2-1 win over the Righetti Warriors on Friday, bringing their PAC-8 record to 6-1 at the halfway mark of the season.

The Bearcats were the first to score when Aiden Kerr found the back of the net off a deflected pass from Carlos Padilla. The Warriors scored late in the first half to tie the game up 1-1 going into halftime.

“Both teams had multiple opportunities to score, but were unable to until the Bearcats scored off a quick restart,” said JV Bearcat Coach Steve Mihelic. “Erick Reyes took the restart, passing to Javy Anguiano who scored with less than a minute to go.”

Each of the three Bearcat goal keepers saw action – Fernando Gomez with five saves, Gorgonio Gonzalez with three, and Reese Eddy with two.

The junior varsity Bearcats will host the San Luis Obispo Tigers at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday at War Memorial Stadium.

Girls’ varsity basketball

Despite a hard-fought battle, the Paso Robles High School varsity girls were unable to bring home a win on Friday night as the Righetti Warriors took a 49-37 win over the Bearcats.

The Bearcats were outscored 20-5 in the first quarter before outscoring the Warriors in the second and third quarters. The two teams played even in the fourth, with the Bearcats cutting the lead within six points in the fourth quarter but ultimately losing the game by 12.

Grace Rosa was the top scorer for Paso Robles, tallying 22 points and shooting 6-for-6 from the foul line.

“Maddy Zambrano played outstanding defense,” added Coach Heidi Wittstrom-Sill. “We were very proud of our teams’ effort tonight.”

The junior varsity and varsity girls will host the San Luis Obispo Tigers on Wednesday, with JV action starting at 4 p.m. and varsity at 5:30 p.m.; the Frosh girls will travel to SLO to play at 7 p.m.

Girls’ varsity soccer

The varsity Lady Bearcats earned a 1-1 tie at home against the visiting Righetti Warriors on Friday in what Bearcat Assistant Coach Michael Esser called a “hard-fought and very physical match,” that had the “entire Bearcat bench and observers in the stands all on their feet.”

Righetti led 1-0 before Paso Robles’ Kailee Vinnedge tied the game with a goal within the last minute of regular play to send the match into overtime. After completing two 10-minute overtime halves, the score remained at 1-1 and the Bearcats and Warriors took the tie.

Goalkeeper Natalya Marcove had 10 saves for Paso Robles and Harrigan Nesbitt had five, with a total of 19 shots on goal by the Warriors. Sophia Solario distributed five corner kicks for the Bearcats, one of which led to Vinnedge’s game-tying goal.

The varsity Bearcats (0-1-6 PAC-8, 3-2-9 overall) will travel to San Luis Obispo on Wednesday to face the Tigers at 6:30 p.m.

Girls’ junior varsity soccer

The junior varsity Bearcat girls defeated the Pioneer Valley Panthers on Friday, 3-0, in what Coach Dillon Simoulis called “another great team win.”

Player of the Game Ryann Coffey opened up for the Bearcats, scoring the first goal in the seventh minute on an assist by Bella Montelongo. Giselle Zatarain scored in the 11th minute for Paso Robles, assisted by Elise Scheiffe’s cross from the left side; Montelongo scored the final goal in the 28th minute assisted by Coffey’s pass 10 yards from goal.

“The Bearcats defense had a great game, only allowing five shots on goal and shutting down any attack Pioneer Valley attempted,” said Simoulis.

In league play to date, the Bearcats (4-1-1 PAC-8, 11-1-1 overall) have conceded just three goals. The JV girls will host the SLO Tigers at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at War Memorial Stadium.

Wrestling

The varsity Bearcat wrestling team was one of 82 teams to compete in the Gilroy MidCal Wrestling Tournament on Friday and Saturday, with Buchanan High School taking first place overall.

In the 145-weight division, Nathan Garcia was the only place winner for the Bearcats, finishing in fifth place. Blake Irysh went four and two, just one round away from the chance to move forward to the medal rounds.

The Bearcats will travel to San Luis Obispo on Tuesday to take on the Tigers; JV matches start at 5:30 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.
