Officials encourage float plans and checking weather conditions before trips
– California State Parks’ Division of Boating and Waterways is reminding recreational boaters and water enthusiasts to take safety precautions during the Labor Day holiday weekend, when waterways are expected to be busier than usual.
“Labor Day is a great time to enjoy California’s lakes, rivers and coastlines, but increased activity on the water means we all must be even more vigilant,” said Ramona Fernandez, deputy director of the Division of Boating and Waterways. “Wearing a life jacket, understanding the local water conditions and avoiding alcohol while boating are small steps that can make a big difference in ensuring a safe and enjoyable outing for everyone.”
State Parks highlighted several boating safety tips. State law requires all children under 13 to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket on a moving vessel, and officials encourage everyone to wear one regardless of age or swimming ability. All boaters must carry a valid California Boater Card, which demonstrates completion of an approved safety course. Boaters are also advised to check the weather and water conditions, file a float plan with someone on land, avoid alcohol while operating a boat and check for closures or restrictions on waterways before heading out.
The Division of Boating and Waterways also urged boaters to help protect waterways from pollution by checking boats for oil and fuel leaks before and after outings, using oil absorbent pads in the bilge and under the engine, and properly disposing of used pads at marina hazardous waste collection sites.
