State Senate approves Diablo Canyon funding extension
Bill would extend community funding program through 2030
– The California State Senate passed Senate Bill 931, authored by John Laird, to continue funding support for communities affected by the ongoing operation of the Diablo Canyon Power Plant, according to a recent press release.
According to Laird’s office, the bill would extend authorization for the Essential Services Mitigation Program through 2030 to align with the state’s decision to continue operations at the power plant through that year.
“SB 931 ensures that communities surrounding Diablo Canyon are not left carrying the financial burden of supporting critical public services tied to the plant’s continued operation,” Laird said. “This funding supports emergency preparedness, fire protection, public safety, and education – services local residents have relied on for decades.”
The Essential Services Mitigation Program was originally created to offset local impacts associated with the plant and provide funding support for affected jurisdictions and services in San Luis Obispo County.
According to the announcement, while the state extended operations at Diablo Canyon through 2030, authorization for the related community funding program was not extended at the same time.
The bill would continue the program through the updated operational period.
The Senate passed the measure on a 29-10 vote. The bill now advances to the Assembly for consideration.
