Strong teamwork leads Bearcat basketball team to first win in Mullahey Holiday Classic
Bearcats travel to San Luis Obispo High School to kick off the three-day tournament
– Just in time for the holidays, the annual Mullahey Holiday Classic basketball tournament has returned, with the Paso Robles High School women’s basketball team once again, taking part in this highly anticipated tournament.
On Thursday afternoon, the Bearcats traveled to San Luis Obispo High School to kick off the three-day tournament and face off against Arvin High School on day one.
With more action yet to come, the Bearcats started the tournament with a solid 42-30 win over the Bears. This win gave the Bearcats their first win of the season now (1-2).
Rebounding and second-chance opportunities were crucial in the win over the Bears. Freshman center Macoy Sill played well off the glass, getting the second-chance points for the Bearcats to acquire.
With help from sophomore Tori Holbrook, the Bearcats not only applied force in rebounding on offense but also translated it onto the defensive end, dominating the boards. Holbrook’s strong defensive presence set up transition plays that ultimately created clean looks down the court for her teammates, creating scoring opportunities early in the game.
Junior small forward Kate Harrington was instrumental in driving the Bearcats’ offense. Whether operating in the post or on the wing, Harrington consistently created separation from her defender, positioning herself to receive passes and score effectively for the Bearcats. Harrington scored eight points in the first quarter and ended the night racking up a total 16 points, leading the Bearcats in scoring.
Leading throughout the entire game, the Bearcats utilized effective ball movement on the perimeter to draw defenders out of position. This constant motion made it difficult for the defense to anticipate where the ball would go next, opening up opportunities for clean looks and high-percentage shots.
Areas for Improvement: Preparing for the next tournament games
The Bearcats’ post players were open for most of the game. However, as the game wore on, they struggled to deliver accurate passes to their open players, particularly in the post. This misstep allowed the Bears to regroup and disrupted the Bearcats’ offensive rhythm, leaving points on the table for the Bears.
“We got to get more disciplined,” head coach Mark Martinez said. “We got to get better at finding the open person.”
As the clock wound down, Arvin implemented a full-court press in a last-ditch effort to cut the deficit and force turnovers. The strategy paid off, as the Bearcats struggled to navigate the pressure, resulting in frequent turnovers. Unable to establish control past half-court, the Bearcats found themselves unable to regain momentum against Arvin’s defense.
The Bearcats look to improve and limit turnovers going into Friday’s matchup on Dec. 6 against Shafter in the small gym at SLO High School at 12:30 p.m.
“We got to get better at protecting the ball,” Martinez said. “We are giving the ball up too much, and if we don’t fix it, we are going to be in trouble.”
