Summertime public transit is free for county youth

–Students in grades K-12 can ride the bus at no cost beginning Friday, June 7 and Saturday, June 8 – depending on which fixed route service you choose (see the schedule below).

Just board the bus, present your student ID, and ride for free. This promotion includes all fixed route service on RTA, SLO Transit, South County Transit, Paso Express, and Morro Bay, but does not include the Morro Bay Trolley and Dial-A-Ride services. Additionally, elementary school kids do not need to present a student ID.

Youth Ride Free 2019 service dates by provider

Regional Transit Authority (RTA): June 8 – August 14, 2019
South County Transit (SCT): June 8 – August 14, 2019
Paso Express: June 8 – August 14, 2019
San Luis Obispo Transit (SLO Transit): June 7 – August 25, 2019
Morro Bay Transit: June 7 – August 17, 2019

Getting our region’s kids out of the house and active in the community is our number one goal, and taking the bus helps kids achieve just that. Using transit involves walking or biking to transit and engaging with others in the community. With this promotion, we hope that students will use their summer to explore the rich variety of opportunities our county has to offer, like the beach, wildlife, bike and recreational areas, historical sites, special events, museums, parks, and libraries.

Parents will also benefit from Youth Ride Free by saving money on gas and creating less wear and tear on their cars. The program increases awareness of other public transit benefits, too, like reducing traffic congestion and contributing to a more sustainable planet and lifestyle. Youth Ride Free is a joint effort of the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments’ Regional Rideshare Division and participating transit operators.
