Synchronized breastfeeding event taking place at Twin Cities

–In recognition of World Breastfeeding Week, Twin Cities Community Hospital is taking part in a global celebration to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding. On Friday, August 4, 2017, breastfeeding mothers and their babies are invited to join lactation consultants and nurses from Twin Cities for The Global Big Latch On, a synchronized breastfeeding event in multiple locations around the world. Part of the goal of the event is to foster a sense of community and solidarity among fellow breastfeeding mothers, while also making breastfeeding a normal part of “day-to-day life” at a community level.

At 10:30 a.m., those mothers at Twin Cities will join thousands of women gathered in their own communities across the globe to simultaneously nurse their babies and break the current Global Big Latch On record of 17,992 children breastfeeding at the same time. Those interested in participating in the event should arrive at Twin Cities by 10 a.m. to sign-in and get comfortable. The number of participants at Twin Cities will be added to the worldwide count. According to the World Health Organization, breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure a child’s health and survival.

In 2015, Baby-Friendly USA designated Twin Cities Community Hospital as an internationally recognized Baby-Friendly birth facility. This achievement means the hospital is using some of the most effective methods known to help moms succeed at breastfeeding. The hospital also has the lowest Cesarean-section rate of any hospital on the Central Coast and one of the lowest rates in the state.

In addition to The Global Big Latch On event, Twin Cities offers weekly support groups, lactation services and breastfeeding classes. For more information about these and other current offerings, please visit www.twincitieshospital.com.
