Taco Bell Track Meet draws large turn out

Students from around the county came to participate

–Seven hundred fifty people including close to three hundred student athletes in kindergarten through 5th grade participated in the 31st Annual Taco Bell Track Meet on Saturday, April 16 at the Paso Robles High School Track, according to Paso Robles Recreation Services. Students from Paso Robles and surrounding areas including San Luis Obispo came to enjoy the day during the fun and friendly competition featuring events in the categories of running, jumping and throwing.

The meet began with the parade of athletes accompanied by their school mascots. The parade was led by the Paso Robles High School bearcat mascot along with recreation staff member Cindy Duff with her pugs Frank and Gracie dressed in taco costumes. Mayor Steve Martin served as the event’s grand marshal, leading the Pledge of Allegiance as well as encouraging and congratulating the athletes. Fourteen-year-old student Rebecca Bradley performed the national anthem.

For the fourth year in a row, the school mascot race was the first competition of the day. The Bauer Speck bobcat won the race this year, unseating the Winifred Pifer panther who has earned the honor of the swiftest mascot for the last three years.

The Boys’ and Girls’ 4 x 100 school relays were an additional highlight of the day. Each of the participating schools was invited to compete in this relay competition. he first place teams earn the bragging rights of displaying the relay trophy at their school for the year. Winners for the Girls’ Relay are: first place Winifred Pifer, second place Lillian Larsen, third place Pat Butler. Among the boys, the top three relay teams are: first place Pat butler, second place Kermit King and third place Georgia Brown.
