Thanksgiving for Paso Robles calling for volunteers

Thanksgiving for Paso Robles, a local nonprofit that serves more than 1000 men, women and children a traditional Thanksgiving meal at no cost, is calling for volunteers for the 33rd annual Thanksgiving dinner. Everyone is invited to enjoy a free Thanksgiving meal. This year’s meal is being served on Nov 23 from noon–2 p.m. at the Centennial Park Activity Center, 600 Nickerson Road. Meals are delivered to those who cannot attend and rides are provided for those who cannot drive.

Thanksgiving for Paso Robles is 100–percent volunteer organized and made possible through the generosity of caring individuals, students, organizations, churches and businesses. It takes about 200 people working nearly 1200 man-hours to put on Thanksgiving for Paso Robles. Staff needs to be organized and scheduled for each and every job. Volunteers help raise the money to buy the food, pick it up, prepare and serve it. Other volunteer jobs include: decorating and setting tables, bussing, cleaning, delivering meals, providing rides and more. A large turn out is expected again this year and the community’s assistance is needed more than ever.

There’s lots to do on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of Thanksgiving week. On Monday the cooking of the turkeys takes place at the Culinary Arts Academy (CAA). On Tuesday the turkey and ham are sliced and pies are cooked at the CAA while another group of volunteers sterilize the kitchen and service ware at Centennial Park. On Wednesday,  set-up and decorate the dining room and a lot more food prep takes place at the park. On Thursday, in addition to serving 400-500 sit down meals, nearly 100 meals are delivered to the home bound and take out dinners are assembled. Then, at the end of the day, everything must be cleaned, inventoried, put away and taken back to storage.

Volunteers need to pre-register now on theThanksgiving for Paso Robles website. No walk-in volunteers please. All volunteers must be 13 years of age or older to volunteer; and 16 years or older to work in the kitchen. Volunteer opportunities are available for families with children, including helping color pictures to decorate the to go boxes for meal delivery.

Anyone who needs a ride to Thanksgiving dinner, or needs a meal delivery, call (805) 239-4137 before noon on Fri, Nov 17. Be sure to leave a return phone number in the message.  To make a donation, volunteer or for more information about Thanksgiving for Paso Robles and the dinner, visit the website, (805) 239-4137 or email Tg4Paso@gmail.com.
